Announcing Canvas, Stanford’s New Learning Management System
During the 2014-2015 academic year, the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) hosted an open pilot of Canvas, a new cloud-based learning management system by Instructure. Canvas proved to offer functionality and workflows that faculty, students and instructional support staff have long wanted in CourseWork. After a successful pilot, Canvas has been adopted as Stanford’s primary LMS as a replacement for CourseWork.
In September 2015, Stanford will begin transitioning to Canvas as our primary LMS. As a part of this phased implementation, we will support courses in both CourseWork and Canvas through December 2016.
CourseWork will be phased out at the end of Fall Quarter 2016. Beginning in Winter 2017, no new courses will be created in CourseWork and it will run in read-only, archive mode.
Canvas courses have been automatically created for all Fall 2015 classes. Instructors can get immediate access to their Canvas courses to start adding content or can request that CourseWork course content be copied over to Canvas. Instructors can login to Canvas to get started.
Note: Instructors will need to click the “Publish” button in the Course Home Page for students to be able to see their Canvas course. A Canvas course will not be available to students until published.
Once your course contains a graded submission, you can no longer unpublish your course. [more]
